Twilio WhatsApp Alternative: Flat Pricing, Five Minutes

October 12, 2026|4 min read

Twilio is a fine way to reach WhatsApp if you want a large vendor and per-message billing. If you would rather pay a flat price for an instance and send your first message today, WSAPI is built for that.

The comparison

Twilio's numbers come from its WhatsApp pricing page as of October 12, 2026. WSAPI's come from our pricing page.

Where the bill comes from

Twilio charges a handling fee of $0.005 on every WhatsApp message, and it counts messages you receive as well as messages you send. On top of that, Meta's template fees pass straight through to you for messages sent outside the customer service window, starting at $0.0034 for utility and authentication templates.

That is cheap at 100 messages a day: about $15 a month in Twilio fees. At 1,000 a day it is $150. A chatbot that answers every incoming message pays twice for each conversation turn, once for the question and once for the reply. The bill follows your traffic, so a good month for your product is also a more expensive month for your messaging.

WSAPI bills per instance. One instance is $5 a month, five are $4.75 each, twenty are $4.60 each, and annual billing takes another 15% off. Message volume does not change the price.

The same message in code

Here is a text message through Twilio:

twilio.js
import twilio from "twilio";

const client = twilio(process.env.TWILIO_ACCOUNT_SID, process.env.TWILIO_AUTH_TOKEN);

const message = await client.messages.create({
  from: process.env.TWILIO_WHATSAPP_FROM,
  to: "whatsapp:+1234567890",
  body: "Your order has shipped",
});

console.log("Message SID:", message.sid);

And through WSAPI:

wsapi.js
import { WSApiClient } from "@wsapichat/client";

const client = new WSApiClient({
  baseUrl: "https://api.wsapi.chat",
  apiKey: process.env.WSAPI_API_KEY,
  instanceId: process.env.WSAPI_INSTANCE_ID,
});

const result = await client.messages.sendTextAsync({
  to: "1234567890@s.whatsapp.net",
  text: "Your order has shipped",
});

console.log("Message ID:", result.id);

The shape is the same: one client, one call, one body. Install it with npm install @wsapichat/client. Prefer plain HTTP? A single POST to https://api.wsapi.chat/messages/text with your key and instance ID does the same job.

Who this fits

WSAPI is the better fit when you are a developer or a small team shipping something real: an order notification, a support bot, an appointment reminder, a back office that talks to customers on WhatsApp. These projects share a pattern. Traffic is steady or growing, the messages are conversational, and nobody wants to explain a variable invoice to a finance team every month.

It also suits teams running several numbers. Each number is its own instance, and the price per instance drops as you add more, so a small agency managing a handful of client accounts can forecast its cost for the year in one line.

What changes when you switch

Setup is the biggest difference. With WSAPI you create an instance, scan a QR code with the WhatsApp account you already use, and send. There is no business verification step and no template approval queue standing between you and your first message. A free trial gives you 14 days of full API access, with no credit card, to prove it before you spend anything.

Receiving messages is just as short. Point a webhook at your server, or open an SSE stream if you would rather not expose a public URL. Every incoming message arrives as a JSON event, and our webhooks guide walks through both options.

Everything else you were doing on Twilio carries over: text, images, documents, voice notes, groups and reactions all work through the same kind of call. If you are building a bot, the quickstart gets you from zero to a reply in a few minutes, and the pricing comparison shows more volumes side by side.

FAQ

Can WhatsApp restrict my number?

WSAPI connects a regular WhatsApp account, so WhatsApp's usage policies apply and accounts that send unsolicited bulk messages can be limited.

Do I need a new phone number?

No. You can link the number you already use.

Where do I see current prices?

On the pricing page, which is always the source of truth.
